Detox diet and detox drinks
Detox Diets and Detox Drinks have become very popular in the nutrition world.
Here at Lose Weight By Eating you’ll find several articles on detox plans and detox diets, and even a best-selling Detox Diet cookbook!
There are many detox diet benefits, and I’ll outline them in this article. I’ll also share 10 popular detox drinks. By the time you’re done reading, you’ll be a pro!
What is a Detox Diet?
The word “Detox” has a bit of a stigma, often affiliated with intensity and starvation, but a healthy detox diet will be easy, and packed full of nutrient rich food.
A healthy detox diet or detox weight loss plan is a departure from eating unnatural processed food and chemical based drinks. And instead concentrating on all natural, nutrient rich foods. Also on a detox plan you will be consuming lots of water.
Detox Cleanse
On a detox cleanse, you’ll concentrate on eating healthy, nutrient based foods, with little regard for calories. It’s all about eating super healthy, with lots of fruits and vegetables, and drinking lots of water. And a removal of all processed food, chemicals and dyes.
Detox Weight Loss Plan
With a detox weight loss plan, you’ll also fill up on nutrient based foods. However, you will take calories consumption into account. A drastic reduction in calories is not necessary, but calorie goals will be taken into account.
Recap: Detox diets can be very different, choosing a healthy detox diet is very important.
Who Can do a Detox Diet?
Traditional detox diets are safe for adults with no major health issues. I always recommend mentioning any new strict eating plan to your doctor before beginning.
Children, pregnant and nursing moms should stay clear of traditional detox diets. And that is why I wrote a safe detox diet plan for those who should not be reducing or limiting calories.
You can find the detox plan that is safe for pregnant and nursing moms, along with 3 other detox diet plans in my cookbook Lose Weight By Eating Detox Week.
Those who should speak with their doctor first may include:
- Pregnant or nursing mothers
- If you have low blood pressure
- Men and women with heart issues
- People with blood sugar issues
- Those who are Diabetic
- Heart issues
- Those on prescription medication altered by diet
Recap: Detox diets are safe for most, talk to your doctor first if you have any concerns.
10 Benefits of a Detox Diet
There are many benefits of a detox diet, here are the top ten… my favorite is #9.
1. More energy
Flushing toxins from your body will leave you feeling more energized. Think about when you eat a heavy meal, and you feel exhausted after.
Now think of when you’ve eaten something so healthy you felt full of energy hours later.
Just think how amazing you would feel if you ate like that for 3 days or a full week!
2. Healthy digestion
There’s just no “lady-like” way to share this with you, let’s just say constipation will be a thig of the past while on a detox diet plan…
While on a detox cleanse you’ll be drinking a lot of water, which will flush your system. The greens will scrub your insides, and your tummy issues will ease.
3. Reduce inflammation
Inflammation in the body can cause many diseases. With chronic inflammation, your body is in a prolonged state of emergency. It can cause brain, organ and heart health issues.
Eating anti-inflammatory foods is a cornerstone of a good detox diet.
4. Weight Loss
Many people report weight loss while on a detox cleanse. You’re taking in lots of naturally metabolism boosting foods, and water also boosts metabolism.
If you’re planning on doing a detox to increase weight loss, try a Detox Week or a Three Day Detox. Both are tailored to weight loss and will even help reset your cravings.
5. Reduction in headaches
Many people get headaches due to sensitivity to artificial dyes and sugars. In a detox diet you stay away from these triggers.
Drinking more water can also help reduce headaches and migraines, a good detox plan will have you drinking up to a gallon of water a day.
Read more on how much water you should drink each day here.
6. Improved mood
Feeling tired and bloated can really ruin your day. As I highlighted above a good detox cleanse will help you feel more energized. Below I will mention how it effects your sleep.
A healthy detox weight loss plan will help reduce bloat within a 24 hours, and will also fill you with energy, elevating your mood.
7. Reset of cravings
One of my favorite results for doing a Detox Week, is to reset my cravings. Anytime I catch myself craving junk food and heavy meals, I do a Detox Week and it resets my cravings to apples and other healthy food.
8. Healthy skin
All that water, and all those anti-inflammatory foods will make you glow! Often a detox week will clear up acne!
9. Increase in life longevity
Two recent studies on rats have shown a reduction in calories extended life span. What’s most exciting is that in some studies the rats lived 83% longer!(1)(2)
10. Better sleep
You sleep better after a healthy dinner! Your body won’t have to work so hard to digest, helping you get a better night’s sleep. Plus, you won’t feel bloated, or have as much heart burn while on a detox plan.
Recap: Detox diets are fantastic for overall health! From more energy, to weight loss and even increasing lifespan, a healthy detox plan is great for your body.
Detox Drinks
Detox drinks have become the new health craze. But you don’t have to spend a fortune purchasing pre-made detox drinks, you can make your own!
In this section I’ll share the three most popular types of detox drinks, and how to make them:
- Detox Water
- Detox Smoothie
- Detox Juice
What is a Detox Drink?
Detox drinks are beverages that will assist you in detoxifying your body. Some are meant for weight loss, others are meal replacements and some are just to curb your soda cravings.
Detox Water
Often called detox tea, detox water is a drink mostly consisting of water. Infused with yummy ingredients that help you enjoy water more (so you can drink more). They also increase metabolism, and flush toxins.
Detox Smoothie
Detox smoothie recipes are meant to fill you up, they are typically a meal replacement. A good detox smoothie will typically consist of a blend of fruits and vegetables.
Detox Juice
Similar to a detox smoothie, a detox juice consists of fruits and vegetables. However, instead of blending them up, you extract all the juice from the produce. This gives you a highly concentrated drink.

Final Thoughts on Detox Diets and Detox Drinks
Trying a detox diet or detox drink just may change the way to look at nutrition! We are not looking to limit food here but increase it! Just make sure you are choosing a good detox plan, here are two healthy detox diets:
Detox Week– a 7 day weight loss plan full of smoothies and salads.
Three Day Detox– a shorter detox diet with quick results.
Did you see the amount of food in the detox smoothies? It’s like a big blended salad… thankfully it tastes better though.
