It’s so very easy to roast chicken in oven, once you make roast chicken recipes, you’ll want to make them all the time. Not only do they make an impressive dinner, but depending on how many people you’re serving, you’ll have lots of delicious leftovers.
Plus, often making a whole chicken in the oven is the cheapest cut you can find. I can regularly find whole chickens for as low as five dollars at my local grocery store.
To make this baked chicken recipe whole as easy as possible, I’ve given you many steps. I wanted them to be easy to read at a glance. Originally, they were only four steps, but again I want to make cooking a whole chicken as easy as possible.
How to Cook a Chicken in the Oven:
- Preheat the oven to 350.
- In a small bowl, combine the zero calorie rub ingredients.
- Add the chicken to a baking dish.
- Remove any chicken parts from the cavity (giblets, neck, liver).
- Rub the chicken with the zero calorie rub. Making sure to get it all over including the inside cavity. Spray the chicken with olive oil. Add the garlic to the cavity.
- Fold back the wings and truss the legs (optional!)
- Add to the oven and roast for 1 hour.
- Baste the outside and inside, and roast for an additional 1 hour.
- Remove from the oven and rest for 10-20 minutes before carving and serving.

Zero Calorie Chicken Rub:
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
Whole Roasted Chicken Ingredients:
- 1 large whole chicken 5-6 pound
- Olive oil spray
- 4 garlic cloves still in their jackets
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350.
- In a small bowl, combine the zero calorie rub ingredients.
- Add the chicken to a baking dish.
