Topped with extra chocolate chips and course salt, these cookies are crave worthy and amazing. I always keep some on hand, but in the freezer to stop myself from eating all of them.

Ingredients for Low Calorie Cookies
These skinny cookies are easy and versatile! Here are the main ingredients I used, but I also have some swaps below to make the recipe vegan, gluten free, or lower in sugar. Plus swaps for ingredients you might not have on hand.
Low Calorie Cookie Ingredients:
- All-Purpose Flour – you can use gluten-free flour too!
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder – this makes the low calorie cookies double chocolate cookies!
- Zero Calorie All-Natural Brown Sugar – saves LOTS of calories, but you can use any kind of sugar you like.
- Baking Soda – helps the cookies “rise”.
- Unsweetened Apple Sauce – helps you omit the eggs, butter, and 1/2 of the sugar. Plus it boosts metabolism!
- Vanilla Extract – get all-natural or “pure” extract.
- Water – milk will also work, but we just need to thin the batter a little, might as well go zero calorie.
- Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips – you could also use sugar free (see below on how much sugar that will save you! Or vegan chocolate chips
- Course Salt – this is optional, but so amazing on these cookies. I really recommend it!

Skinny Cookie Ingredient Swaps:
- Lower the Sugar – if you swap out the semi sweet chocolate chips for sugar free chocolate chips (I like monk fruit sweetened- they are all natural) you can lower the sugar down to just 0.4g per cookie!
- Gluten-Free – use gluten free 1:1 flour (I like Bob’s Red Mill) in place of the flour.
- Apple Sauce Swap – you can use pear baby food, pumpkin puree, or 2 tablespoons of coconut oil plus 1 egg in place of the apple sauce should you desire.
- Regular Chocolate Chip Cookies – you can swap the cocoa powder for regular flour if you want low calorie chocolate chip cookies.
- Vegan – to make this recipe vegan all you need to do is swap out the chocolate chips for vegan chocolate chips.
You can even add in Low Calorie Marshmallows to this cookie recipe. Just make the “Mini” version outlined and add 1/4 cup to the batter.
How to Make Low Calorie Cookies
These low cal cookies are easy and delicious! I love to add the course salt to the tops, but that is optional!
Make sure to use parchment paper! To cut calories I don’t add any oil or butter to the dough. So without the parchment paper they will stick to the baking sheet. Alternatively, you can grease the cookie sheet, but this will add calories.
Tools and Equipment:
- 2 Bowls
- Measuring Cups & Spoons
- Whisk OR Fork
- Cookie Sheet
- Parchment Paper

How to Make the Lowest Calorie Cookies:
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- To a large bowl combine the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda and salt. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl combine the apple sauce, vanilla extract and water. Whisk together.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix together until just combined.
- Add 1/2 of the chocolate chips and fold into the batter.
- Scoop out 16 cookie balls and place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Wet your hands a little and then press the cookies down a bit to form cookie rounds.
- Top with remaining chocolate chips and course salt.
- Bake for 7 minutes, then remove from the oven and let cool completely on the baking sheet (they will continue to cook on the sheet while they cool.)
Skinny Cookie Storage:
- Freeze – add to a freezer bag and pop in the freezer. Will hold for 1 month.
- Refrigerate – cover and place in the fridge, will last up to 2 weeks.
- Pantry – not recommended, you’ll eat them all! But if you must, cover and store for 5 days in the pantry.

Nutrition and Calories in Low Calorie Cookies
The nutrition below is based off using regular flour and semi sweet chocolate chips. I did not add the course salt to the nutrition label as I was unsure how many people would want it. If you add it, it will not change the calories, just the sodium.
Lower the Sugar: I supplied tips on lowering the sugar down to just 0.4g in the Ingredient Section!
