Ingredients in Low Calorie Burger Buns
I love making these buns! They are the lowest calorie buns you can make and are wonderful for burgers, sandwiches, and even my low calorie sloppy Joe recipe!
Healthy Burger Bun Ingredients:
- Olive Oil Spray – my #1 low calorie cooking tip, use olive oil spray! It’s a fine mist instead of a heavy drizzle.
- Rapid Rise Yeast – we use a lot of yeast, but it means we can use a lot less of the flour!
- Garlic Cloves – adds a ton of flavor and round out this yummy soup
- Warm Water – warm water activates the yeast, so you get fluffy buns!
- Flour – you can use all-purpose, unbleached, or gluten-free flour.
- Salt – you can omit if you need to lower the sodium, but this makes the flavor “pop”.
- Optional Toppings – see below for some yummy toppings for these low calorie buns!

Optional Toppings:
- Sesame seeds
- Chopped onions
- Chopped garlic
- Course salt
How to Make the Healthiest Buns for Burgers
This healthy burger bun recipe is easy, but you have to give the yeast time to rise, so set aside a few hours for the dough to rise.
Tools and Equipment:
- Countertop mixer (or a bowl and whisk)
- Plastic wrap
- Baking Sheet
- Kitchen Towel

How to Make Healthy Burger Buns:
- In a standing mixer (or a large bowl), whisk together the water, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- Add the salt, and 1/2 cup of flour at a time mixing with the kneading hook, making sure it is incorporated before adding more flour. (If using a bowl and spatula, work 1/2 cup of flour in at a time until you have a sticky dough.)
- If using a standing mixer, kneed the dough for 2-3 minutes on medium speed until you have a smooth dough. If you don’t have a standing mixer, add some flour to a clean countertop and kneed the dough by hand for 3-5 minutes until you have an elastic like dough.
- Leave (or add back) the dough in the mixer bowl, and cover with plastic wrap and then a kitchen towel. Leave to rise for 1 hour (Special Tip: Leave the dough to rise in a warm and draft free spot of your home).
- Spray the baking sheet with olive oil spray and preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
- Uncover the dough, punch down and give a quick 1 minute kneed, then move to a clean floured surface. Cut into 10 portions.
- Form the burger buns and add to the prepared baking sheet as you work. Spray lightly with olive oil, and push down a bit so they are large enough to hold a burger. Then add any desired toppings.
- Cover with a damp kitchen towel to rise for one hour (again, ideally in a warm place).
- Bake at 400 degrees for 20 – 25 minutes or until the buns are golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and leave in the baking tray for 10 minutes to finish cooking, then move to a wired rack to cool.
