Ingredients in Homemade Hot Dog Buns
You’re just 4 ingredients away from the best healthy homemade hot dog buns! You’ll also need a hot dog bun tray, and I have supplied more information on that in the “How To” section.
Homemade Hot Dog Bun Ingredients:
- Olive Oil Spray – my #1 low calorie cooking tip, use olive oil spray! It’s a fine mist instead of a heavy drizzle.
- Warm Water – warm water activates the yeast, so you get fluffy buns!
- Rapid Rise Yeast – we use a lot of yeast, but it means we can use a lot less of the flour!
- Flour – use all-purpose, unbleached, or gluten-free.
- Salt – you can omit if you need to lower the sodium, but this makes the flavor “pop”.

I recommend getting unbleached flour, it has more nutritional value. It won’t change the calories, but you’ll get more health benefits from it. And if you are going to eat carbs, might as well make them healthier, right?
Also, make sure your yeast is fresh, otherwise the buns won’t rise and you’ll get a tour dough.
How to Make Healthy Hot Dog Buns
You can mold these into the shape of hot dog buns and get away with it that way. But if you decide to make these often, I recommend a proper hot dog bun tray. It makes the best buns and they are super low cost!
Tools and Equipment:
- Countertop Mixer (or bowl and spatula)
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Plastic Wrap
- Kitchen Towel
- Hot Dog Bun Tray

How to Make Homemade Hot Dog Buns:
- In a standing mixer (or a large bowl), whisk together the water, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- Add the salt, and 1/2 cup of flour at a time mixing with the kneading hook, making sure it is incorporated before adding more flour. (If using a bowl and spatula, work 1/2 cup of flour in at a time until you have a sticky dough.)
- If using a standing mixer, kneed the dough for 2-3 minutes on medium speed until you have a smooth dough. If you don’t have a standing mixer, add some flour to a clean countertop and kneed the dough by hand for 3-5 minutes until you have an elastic like dough.
- Leave (or add back) the dough in the mixer bowl, and cover with plastic wrap and then a kitchen towel. Leave to rise for 1 hour (Special Tip: Leave the dough to rise in a warm and draft free spot of your home).
- Spray a hot dog baking mold with olive oil spray and preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
- Uncover the dough, punch down and give a quick 1 minute kneed, then move to a clean floured surface. Cut into 12 portions.
- Form the hot dog buns and add to a hot dog baking mold. Cover with a damp kitchen towel to rise for one hour (again, ideally in a warm place).
- Bake at 400 degrees for 20 – 25 minutes or until the buns are golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and leave in the baking tray for 10 minutes to finish cooking, then move to a wired rack to cool.
