When I started writing my best-selling Instant Pot Cookbook I knew I had to include this recipe for Instant Pot Yogurt without a Yogurt Button. First, I did not have an Instant Pot Model with a yogurt button, but also because I could not find a recipe for it.

Greek Yogurt is a thicker, creamier version of a plain yogurt recipe. You can use the yogurt whey (the liquid that drains out when you make Greek Yogurt) in your favorite bread baking recipe!

Instant Pot Coconut Yogurt Recipe

Now before the calorie count in this coconut milk yogurt recipe scares you off, please note that canned coconut milk is both high in calories AND a super food!

Homemade coconut yogurt recipes need the fat of the canned/boxed coconut milk… so don’t use the stuff in the refrigerated section.

Also, please note that this homemade yogurt recipe (unlike the previous 3) is sweetened. You could make this coconut yogurt in Instant Pot unsweetened and save 26 calories per serving.

Tips: Making Vegan Instant Pot Yogurt

I often see the question: “Can I make vegan yogurt in an Instant Pot?” and through all my research and testing, I’m happy to tell you that it is possible and not to different from making non-vegan yogurt.

Here are a few tips to help you make homemade vegan yogurt:

  • Get a vegan starter, I like Belle + Bella Non-Dairy Yogurt, Starter
  • “Cook” it longer, a dairy yogurt takes about 8 hours, a Vegan yogurt will take from 14 to 24 hours.
  • Get full fat, canned coconut milk… not the refrigerated kind. (I know this will increase the calories, but it truly is necessary). Or boxed Soy milk, I like Westsoy.
  • Don’t sweeten until later… Adding honey will ruin the process, so instead opt for maple syrup. Or better yet, make it unsweetened and add sweetener upon eating it. This way you can use it in place of sour cream and crème fresh, yum!

Tips: Making Greek Yogurt vs. Regular Yogurt

Greek yogurt is simply a denser yogurt, so when you make yogurt in an Instant Pot you are making yogurt. No extra step needed there.

To make it Greek yogurt you simply have to strain it in through cheese cloth for a few hours to remove some of the liquid.

Tips: Storing Instant Pot Yogurt

Storing your Instant Pot yogurt is simple and easy, and so that you don’t have to read all the way through the tips I will say upfront, yes you can freeze it.

I like to store my yogurt in individual containers, call me a creature of habit, but I like the single serving yogurts just like I got when I was a kid. I prefer glass containers with plastic lids, Pyrex makes a good individual container.

If you choose to store everything in a large container, I recommend placing a sheet of parchment paper over it, just as Fage yogurt does., This will keep it fresh longer.

You’ll want to use up your unfrozen yogurt in a week, but yes you can freeze it for up to a month.
